Robert Francis Prevost, born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, is the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. With rich cultural and religious roots, he has served in various capacities within the Church before becoming the first American and Peruvian pope, as well as the first from the Augustinian Order.
Early Life
Robert Francis Prevost grew up in a proto-Catholic family in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Louis Marius Prevost, was a school principal, while his mother, Mildred Martinez, worked as a librarian. He comes from a diverse background with French, Italian, Spanish, and Creole roots. Robert's parents were actively involved in the St Mary of The Assumption parish, where he served as an altar boy alongside his two older brothers. His early education was at Saint Augustine Seminary in Michigan.
Education
Prevost pursued higher education at Villanova University, where he earned a degree in Mathematics and studied Philosophy. In 1977, after joining the Augustinian religious order, he continued his theological studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, earning a Master of Divinity in 1982. He furthered his education at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome, completing his Doctorate in Canon Law in 1987. His doctoral dissertation focused on 'The role of the Local prior in the Order of St Augustine.'
