Nicol Rae Hanna was born in Hillsboro, Texas, to Juanita Joy Hanna and Felipe Tobias. At just five months old, Nicol was adopted by her grandmother, Juanita ('Mom'), who became her primary parent and lifelong confidant. The two moved to Wyoming, where Nicol spent her early childhood. Family life was complex but close-knit. Early memories involve taking the bus from Greybull to Basin, Wyoming for Head Start classes, and sharing everyday joys like recounting her first kiss to her mom or enjoying ham and cheese Hot Pockets after school. Tough circumstances during her formative years forced Nicol to take on significant responsibilities from a young age, often helping care for her mom and running essential errands, such as trips to the food pantry. Her early years were nomadic: from Wyoming to Belfield, North Dakota, then to Regent and later Beulah and Golden Valley. Despite the moves, her grandmother remained her anchor, offering stability and wisdom. Nicol’s narrative is deeply influenced by these early years, both the warmth and the hardships, including limited access to traditional schooling due to family needs and shifting household dynamics.

Nicol Hanna’s education was nontraditional. From second to sixth grade, she was nominally homeschooled while also caring for her ailing mother, resulting in educational gaps discovered under the No Child Left Behind policy. Despite these supports, turmoil at home and ongoing responsibilities led Nicol to drop out of high school in the tenth grade. Efforts to combine schooling with family care—alongside pressures from partners and siblings—ultimately diverted her from completing traditional educational milestones. She found valuable life lessons outside the classroom, particularly in resilience and resourcefulness, and entered the workforce soon after becoming a mother.

Nicol’s life can be described as a patchwork of perseverance, resourcefulness, and unceasing caretaking. After dropping out of school and entering early motherhood, Nicol joined the workforce, taking a job at the Grant County Soil Conservation office shortly after her first child’s birth. She formed supportive friendships, including with a colleague who became a lifeline during this period. Living arrangements always seemed interconnected; when she resided in Flasher, North Dakota, her mom lived directly across the street, and they connected their homes with a long Ethernet cable for convenience and closeness. Despite anxieties about caring for her newborns, especially Jussi in those fragile early weeks, Nicol always prioritized her children’s wellbeing—often alone, as Alex was absent for critical moments. She maintained a deep sense of familial loyalty and responsibility, not just to her children but also to her mother and extended family members. Even under the weight of personal struggle—such as coping with solo parenthood, a turbulent love life, and the economic realities of raising three children—her persistence, empathy, and sense of humor endured. During a pregnancy with her youngest child, a particularly violent altercation led Nicol to end the relationship once and for all for her and her children’s safety.
