Quick Bio
Tamara "Tammy" Medhurst is a Canadian caregiver and administrative professional, whose life journey has been shaped by resilience, family devotion, and a longstanding dedication to helping others. Raised in Calgary and rooted in strong community values, Tammy’s experiences span decades of hands-on childcare and administrative work, along with significant personal challenges. Balancing the joys of family tradition with the trials of health issues and economic hardship, she exemplifies perseverance, empathy, and sincerity in all her endeavors.
Early Life
Tamara Medhurst, known to her friends and family as Tammy, was born and raised in Calgary, Canada, spending a formative portion of her upbringing in Lethbridge. Her childhood was immersed in a vibrant and supportive family community, where hockey was more than a pastime—it was a family tradition. Surrounded by relatives actively participating in the local hockey scene, Tammy grew up cheering on her father and brothers from the sidelines. Despite grappling with chronic asthma, which resulted in frequent hospitalizations throughout her youth, Tammy found her sense of belonging through family events and community involvement.
An enduring highlight of Tammy's early life was the annual summer holidays spent in Northern Idaho. For 27 years, she and her family, accompanied by a convoy of friends in a converted Air Force bus-turned-RV, created cherished memories camping, boating, and enjoying lakeside adventures. These summer excursions became a pillar in Tammy’s life, imbuing her with a love for togetherness and the outdoors that continues to this day.
Education
Tammy's educational journey was marked by both perseverance and adaptability. Despite initial struggles in school and not graduating with her class, she demonstrated determination by earning her GED a few years after leaving high school. This achievement showcased her commitment to personal growth, even when formal education was challenging. Tammy also pursued childcare training, obtaining her certification as a Child Development Assistant. Her quest for self-improvement didn’t end there; while actively working in childcare, she attended night classes for eight months and earned a Land Administration certification, opening new avenues in her professional path.
Informal Learning Experiences
Throughout her career, Tammy has relied on real-world experiences, particularly through her extensive volunteer work in community arenas and babysitting, both of which provided key foundations for her skills in leadership, organization, and empathy.
General Stuff
Tammy’s professional background is both diverse and adaptive, reflecting a readiness to embrace whatever opportunities enabled her to support herself and her family. Her career began as a nanny for a family member, a role she held for approximately six years. Following this, she occupied temporary roles in retail and administration before returning to childcare, where her commitment and skills saw her promoted to an administrative position within a childcare center. After a life-altering accident eight years ago, Tammy has shifted her focus towards less physically demanding roles, aspiring to build a new chapter in office administration. Her strong volunteer ethic, developed through work in community hockey arenas (concessions, bingo, casinos, and tournaments), is evidence of her longstanding commitment to community service.

Emotional/Love Life
Tammy’s life has been shaped in significant ways by her deep familial ties and caregiving responsibilities. While she has never had a romantic relationship, she has cultivated lasting friendships, though some have faded over time. The most profound emotional chapter of her life involved caring for her mother during the latter’s battles with dementia and leukemia. As her mother’s primary caregiver, Tammy provided comprehensive support for over a year, tending to her mother’s needs until she transitioned to a long-term care facility. Her mother’s passing, just over four years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, left a lasting impact and deepened Tammy's appreciation for family connection and resilience. Tammy continues to support her father, helping him in his home, although he is more independent.
Dreams and Fantasies
Looking towards the future, Tammy’s aspirations center on securing financial independence and self-sufficiency. She dreams of finding fulfilling, remote administrative work that would enable her to live independently and responsibly, no longer reliant on her family for financial support. Tammy is deeply aware of the need to prioritize her own health and wellbeing—a realization spurred by her lifelong struggles with obesity and inactivity. While her personal ambitions are modest, her motivation is clear: to gain stability and maintain the close familial bonds that have always defined her life. Her dreams are grounded in practicality, yet colored by an enduring hope for a more active, independent, and rewarding future.
